Show how light is stopped or passes the polaroids.
What are the advantages of polaroid glasses?
Ordinary light moves straight ahead in a wave motion. The light contains wave planes in all directions. A polaroid filter only allows waves on a certain plane to pass through – the light is polarised. By positioning two polarised in sequence, more or less light can pass through depending on the orientation of the filters in relation to each other.
When light is reflected, e.g. in water or a wet road surface, the light is polarised. A pair of sunglasses with polaroids can therefore extinguish reflections – but only if the polaroids are mounted in the right direction!
The light from many computer monitors is also polarised.
Tip: Adjust two polaroids so they stop the light. Position a third polaroid in the middle – what happens?
