Sending light into a fibre is reminiscent of sending water into a hose. If it does not leak, everything emerges at the other end.
Illuminate with a lamp or a laser pointer at one end of the fibre model and watch the light emerge at the other end. Fibre optics is used today on a large scale for communication. Instead of transmitting electrical signals in copper wires, light signals are transmitted in glass or plastic fibres. Fibre optics is based on the total reflection of the light inside the fibre. This means that light can travel long distances with relatively small losses. The demonstration can inspire discussions on refractive index in various media, reflection and total reflection, for example. Something to think about: What might the reason why a little light leaks along the whole fibre model be?
Material: Plastic.
Dimensions: 44x15x1 cm.
